Brexit and Bigots…

As if things couldn’t get any worse, my little Island (UK) has decided to leave Europe. Instead of having time to process what all this will mean for us, we’re fed pictures and videos of attacks against immigrants, Muslims and Europeans. I’m really disgusted at the post-brexit racism that has been doing its rounds on social media. Utterly shameful. The fact that so many people voted to leave the EU just to spite immigrants and Muslims is quite simply, the single most disturbing thing I’ve heard in a while. I hate that there is a wider variety of victims for these intellectually challenged neanderthals. I’m so glad that the majority of people in the UK are far from that “chav”, caveman mentality.

It saddens me that Muslims have to suffer a fresh round of abuse. It just doesn’t seem to end. I hope the British public fight these thugs and come together to get racists off our streets or silence them into correct public conduct.

Racism online feels like it’s at an all time high. The funniest things I see online are the comments made by people who have no understanding of Islam and who have probably never even met a Muslim and who probably never socialise with fellow Europeans or immigrants. It’s always so obvious who they are. People who drag up a verse from the Quran and deduce from it nothing but that our coexistence has to be one of violence; quoting texts that pertain to war and events that occurred in the lifetime of the prophet Mohamed peace and blessings be upon him. They assume that such texts are somehow still relevant to the daily rituals of Muslims today or that every foreigner has come to steal their jobs. Ridiculous. We all know the type.

What’s odd however is, they’re not ignorant to the fact that plenty of scriptures contain such texts and may even be followers of such scriptures themselves! Their sense of comprehension and logic is there when it wants. They’re just selective. Christians and Jews and people of other faiths can have holy books AND can live in this modern world but Muslims…   It’s as though whenever Islam is mentioned they cloak their minds and hearts with nothing but burning hate and can’t see through the thick smog of bigotry that’s blurring their vision. They also seem to conveniently forget how much immigrants have done, or the input of fellow Europeans and when you remind them of say, how Indians, Somalis and even Poles also served Britain in WWII they’ll more than likely dismiss this or shrug because of course they’re right and fact, logic and good sense are wrong.

The xenophobic bigots are a category all on their own though because this group were more than likely already flirting with, if not in bed with racism and Islamophobia. These are the ones who try to mask their racism and hate for anyone who doesn’t mirror themselves and their way of life by hurling vile remarks of “leave our land” – “go back” and the pathetic “you’re threatening our way of life”. These guys were waiting, lurking in the shadows before Brexit and have now lunged at the chance of being “justified”. They walk around shameless taunting any one with the slightest hint of melanin, with ethnic clothing;  or anyone who is simply different to them including the blonde haired blue eyed Eastern European.

Bigots develop this peculiar sense of superiority to validate their ignorance and use that to justify their treatment of Muslims, Europeans and Immigrants – Lord knows you can’t even have an educated debate without being bulldozed by ad hominem and slander. Beating their chests or keyboards with sanctimonious foolery and self-righteous hypocrisy in typical playground bully temperament. They claim to want “peace” and a better Britain when they are the biggest threats to it with their divisive mentality and illogical destruction of unity.

For those such people I say, go to your local Mosque and despite your hate I guarantee you, you will be met with nothing but sincere welcome and open arms. Go meet Muslims in your community and engage in conversation, you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Take the time out to say hello and get to know your Spanish, French, Polish, Indian, Pakistani, Somali or Nigerian neighbour because I guarantee you, you will find that: “we are more alike my friend then we are unalike” – Maya Angelou
